What is a Home funeral?Quite simply, a Home Funeral is one that is held in your private home, church or other location instead of a funeral parlor. Your deceased loved one remains in your home typically for a period of one to three days. Family members bathe, dress and drape the body for viewing. The body remain home lying in a natural state using options other than embalming. The emphasis is on minimal, non-invasive and environmentally-friendly care of the body. Final disposition of the body may be either by cremation or burial. The family acts as the “authorizing agent” in lieu of a funeral director.
We have taken death out of the cycle of life with the conventional funeral. We have loss or pushed that part of our life journey to the unknown which has created fear. During the Civil War, wanting to have our loved ones body brought home, the conventional funeral business was born and we gave the care to “professionals”. And what a wonderful service for the safe return of the body, because of the return of the body we had some healing in our grief. However, as time passed in our conventional funerals we have lost some of the end-of-life healing and “we don’t mourn our loss which prolongs our grief”. (www.centersforloss.com)
Now when someone dies we give our loved one to a stranger (professional) to care for them while we try and find meaning to life. While in the past we would have washed, dressed and honored our loved one for the family and friends to come and pay their last respect. Allowing for our own mind and heart to connect to the death.
A Home Funeral is a traditional funeral or Wake, where we honor our deceased loved one in the private comfort of his/her home, where we are most comfortable. We can slow down and hold the sacred space with the family and friends caring for the deceased. In the private home you feel empowered by participating in a time frame that meets your needs, giving a feeling of some control after death. This loving touch supports the bereaved.
Here on You Tube you can experience the sharing of two home funerals. I am thankful that families have given permission to share in this deeply personal experience of loss.
